Description
|
The Jolin Pre-School/Elementary Program is a Reverse Inclusion program designed to integrate students with special needs and general education students in the same classroom for the entirety of the school day. The Jolin Program was created with a goal of preparing students with special needs to return to their home district after receiving an intensive educational curriculum as well as social skills training. This program serves students from the age of three years through the sixth grade. The classroom is managed by a Special Education teacher as well as qualified, full-time para-professionals.

Special needs students in the Jolin Program typically have a diagnosis that includes the need for social language skills as well as overall social skills. Typical diagnoses might include High-Functioning Autism or Asperger Syndrome. Behavior as it relates to these diagnoses might be a component of the disability but generally not to the extent that it requires intensive para-professional support. Other disabilities, or a combination of disabilities, could also be considered for admission to the program dependent on the IEP and specific needs.

Referrals/
Funding
|
Special education students in the Jolin Program are typically referred and funded by their local school district. Placement into the program follows a review of the IEP and an interview and screening visit in the classroom setting. The district funding covers all costs of the daily program and designated instructional services with the exception of school lunches, field trips or other program components outside of the IEP.
General education students are funded privately and are helpful as peer models. They receive an educational program commensurate with what is available in public or private schools but with more individual attention and small group instruction. General education students are generally meeting grade level expectancy but may require more repetition and review to retain skills. In many cases, these students are siblings of the students with special needs.

Classroom Size/Adult to Student Ratio

A typical classroom could serve up to 12 students with special needs and 8 general education students. The adult/student ratio is no more than 1:5 and could include two special education teachers.

Curriculum/
Services
|
The curriculum in the Jolin Program is based on California State Standards utilizing text books identified by the local school district. All students are provided by text books appropriate to their grade level equivalency. Curriculum components include:

Social skills training and activities are an important component of the Jolin curriculum. For example, all students participate in the “Cool Kids Club”. This social skills program is led by a speech pathologist and educational counselor. During these sessions both students with special needs and general education students learn techniques and skills required to assimilate into their home school environment. The skills learned are then facilitated throughout the entire school day, in the classroom as well as during breaks.

Along with the incorporation of state content standards in all academic areas and individual services defined on specific IEP’s, the Jolin Program offers the following program components within each classroom:
è Social Skills program (one hour weekly)
è Adaptive Physical Education (one hour weekly)
è Music (one half hour weekly)
è Computer lab (one hour weekly)
è Academics Through Art program (one hour weekly)
è Handwriting Without Tears led by Occupational Therapist (one half hour weekly)
è Occupational Therapist consult
è Vision lab (per individual needs)
è Reading lab – Lindamood Bell or Language! (per individual needs)
è Small Group Speech Therapy (Pre-K classrooms)
è Small Group Occupational Therapy (Pre-K classrooms)
An FM sound field system has been installed in each classroom to assist students in attending to classroom instruction.

Mandated
State Testing
|
Testing requirements are specified in the IEP from the Second Grade through the Sixth Grade. Jolin students generally are tested utilizing the California State Test provided by their local school district. Tests are administered by SLDC staff during the specified testing periods. Test scoring is done at the State Department of Education with results provided to parents/guardians by the school districts. General Education students receive report cards and testing may be requested from the school district.

Lunch
Program
|
Lunches can be provided through the Hot Lunch program provided by the Centralia School District. We participate in the National Free/Reduced Price program.
