LOCAL DANCE GROUP FULFILLS LIFELONG DREAM – TO PERFORM AT THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES OPENING CEREMONY
Buena Park, CA – July 13, 2015. The SLDC Hi-Tops are a dance group that was formed 35 years ago at Speech and Language Development Center (SLDC). The group, comprised of former and current special education students has performed at all National Special Olympics but never in an opening ceremony. “This will be the culmination of a lifelong dream for us,” dance group director Sandy Garcia said.
SLDC has a strong presence in this year’s Special Olympics World Games. Two alumni who are Hi-Tops carried the Olympic torch, running through downtown L.A. On Sunday, July 19th the torch will arrive at Downtown Disney and the Hi-Tops will perform on the ESPN stage at 8 p.m. as part of the ceremony. On July 20th they will perform at 3 p.m. at Buena Park City Hall as the torch arrives there.
The crowning achievement will be performing at the opening ceremony at the L.A. Coliseum on July 25th where the Hi-Tops will be signing to “Reach Up L.A.” The group has been rehearsing diligently under the direction of Debbie Allen. They will be part of an opening ceremony that includes Stevie Wonder and Avril Levigne.
